Idol Worship

The use of idols was one that was widely practiced in the Old Testament. It was the reason that the LORD selected the land that He did as the gift to the descendents of Abraham. By the time that the Hebrew slaves were released from Egypt, it was with a promised possession in their hearts that involved the removal of other land inhabitants who the people of God would replace and be blessed by a land flowing with milk and honey. Yet even as the LORD was leading the people to the promise land, just a small lag in time caused them to go back to the worship of idols. They made a golden calf which they said was the representation of the Living God, but their worship was completely against the character of the God that they had formerly known. Instead their celebration went against the honorable standards in which they were raised to instead, illicit activity. This caused the first civil war in Israel and instead of life and joy, brought death to very man of the former Hebrew slaves.

Though the way in which God had the inhabitants removed from Canaan may seem ruthless, it was their practices that were ruthless and ended in a lifestyle that would rob all participants of the Promise land of Heaven forever. This was done by not only polluting their way of life, but by having them serve false Gods that in no way could offer an earthly reward, and certainly not an eternal one.

Idol worship such as the worship of Moloch, in Canaan involved orgies, or male and female prostitutes, and the sacrifice of one’s children. It is not much different than some of the activities of today, where there is sexual behavior between those with no commitment. Often there is no prior knowledge of one’s partner before such occurrences. The thoughts of God of these issues are cast aside. The knowledge of sin as being such relationships without marriage are of no concern to today’s idol worshipping society. Only the lust for things that we see, and how to get it whether or not righteousness is involved in day to day life.

At the end of many relationships is the sacrifice of children. The use of abortions to rid one of unwanted children through these noncommittal relationships are at epidemic proportions. This can be referred to as the shedding of innocence blood. Today it is continuum women ’s rights to the control of their bodies as a source for the suffering of death of many babies and sub lifestyle of many indigent children. There is no thought to a Holy God, or the result of one’s eternity for such actions. The same danger of idolatry exists and that is a fearful eternity without God.

The appeal of idolatry is one that intrigues the flesh. The things that look good; the things we feel will bring us glory, the things that make our flesh feel good, are all things that empower the flesh, and choke the Spirit of God in our lives. These things bring no lasting reward, and only temporary opulence. Shall we give our lives to the worship of our flesh, or shall we seek reward, running the race that brings true everlasting riches?

Though many Christians have become lax in their restraints Jesus never changes. God love, bless and keep your mind in desire to bring glory to Him who is the answer to all things
