Is It Real? (Speaking in tongues)
In the earlier years of having the Holy Ghost I was puzzled at the reality of such a supernatural experience of speaking in an un-learned language. On one occasion in the midst of a conversation with my father, I began to speak in “tongues”. My father, astonished, spoke in a Creole French language while growing up. He did not share this with us after he married my mother, and would hardly ever mention a word in the dialect, for some reason. When the tongues subsided, he looked at me in a surprised way and said “you shouldn’t say that, you don’t know what you’re saying”
I surely didn’t know what I was saying, I didn’t have a clue that he did. I simply replied, “I sure don’t ! Looking at me suspiciously, he began to speak in his childhood dialect. Clueless, I gazed at him in an empty stare. I didn’t understand and I told him so.
Quickly he left the room, this was the end of the happy conversation and laughter.
Later the next morning, I asked my mother what he had said about the incident. She replied that he said it was French, but refused to say what was said. We never learned the truth, even after many years.
Acts:2: 4: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5: And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6: Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7: And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8: And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
I often wondered what the Lord would cause us to say in another language. Years later, I heard a man singing in Hebrew some of the same words that I had heard come out of my mouth as I prayed in the Spirit. He then translated saying;
“My King, my Lord, my God!”
Speaking in tongues is really glorifying God as the Bible says. It is real and for as many as the Lord our God shall call.
