Jesus said he did not come to destroy the Law. So some believing that anything that Jesus did, destroys the reason for paying tithes and offering have sadly deceived themselves. Speaking to men of Israel, Jesus said of paying tithes, “this you should have done, but not forget the love of God” Tithes were not established during the law. It was obviously a common practice long before there was any law, to pay a tenth of increase to servants of the LORD.
Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. Gen 14:19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
Gen 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
(History bears out that at one time, all nations knew of the One God, whether or not they served him.) Tithing was not started by the law, and does not end when the sacrifice of bulls and goats end.
I remember in my first year of having received the Holy Ghost and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ that I came to work in great pain. I was talking to the young lady that had originally invited me to church and asking her a question. Suddenly she changed the subject and starting talking about tithes, and why we should pay tithes. When my heart received what she was saying, IMMEDIATELY I WAS HEALED. All of the pain was gone though I had not revealed that I was suffering pain to her.
The Lord spoke to me years later and told me that to not pay my tithes to the church that I was attending, was like backing into darkness.
It’s just a tenth, and it does bring with it blessings when we really need it.
Heb 7:8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he received them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.
“He who Liveth”, is Jesus Christ. How can Jesus Christ receive tithes unless they are paid to His church?
We use to say, if you’re serious about something, “PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS”. Are you serious about Jesus? Jesus came to be our sacrifice for sins, but any church needs money to operate.
